History
University Heights Borough, and Park Boulevard
Founded in 1885.
The University of Southern California considered a second branch in San Diego and the city offered 16 acres for the site, naming it University Heights. A state teachers college opened in the planned area instead in 1899. Operating continuously for more than 30 years.
University Heights doesn’t host a university today, but it’s perch high above Mission Valley offers scenic views of the mountains in the east and ocean to the west, as well as many canyon vistas, and is filled with hundreds of historic, cherished, pre-World War II craftsman homes and a strong sense of neighborhood.
It was master-planned in 1887 by the College Hill Land Association and became an early “streetcar suburb.” The community’s colorful history includes an ostrich farm and a silk mill.
Park Boulevard was part of historic US Route 80 when the highway terminated at the intersection of Park Boulevard and Broadway (1929-1930s), and later continued down Park Boulevard to Market Street (1943-1953).
